An Eco-friendly packaging solution -- PLA

Here at IXIN we are true believers in the sustainable green movement. Our organization is always looking at new sustainable manufactures, new materials and innovative ideas towards the sustainable green movement for the cosmetic packaging industry. We love to share all ideas to help promote a greener Earth.

We also written to 2 other articles in regard to sustainable cosmetic packaging.

What is PLA?

PLA is a type of polyester made from fermented plant starch from corn, cassava, maize, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp. The sugar in these renewable materials are fermented and turned into lactic acid, when is then made into polylactic acid, or PLA. PLA plastic can be a great way to adopt a more environmentally friendly approach to your packaging.

Some of our Refillable Cream Jars and bottles are made of PLA biodegradable material. In the packaging industry, PLA plastics are often used for plastic films and food containers.

How long does the PLA take to degrade?

What are the benefits of using PLA?

It’s common knowledge that the world’s oil reserves will eventually run out. As petroleum-based plastics are derived from oil, they will become more difficult to source and manufacture over time. However, PLA can be constantly renewed as it is processed from natural resources.

Compared to its petroleum counterpart’s, PLA is biodegradable under commercial composting conditions and will breakdown within twelve weeks, making it a more environmentally choice when it comes to plastics in contrast to traditional plastics which could take centuries to decompose and end up creating microplastics.

The manufacturing process for PLA is also more environmentally friendly than that of traditional plastics made from finite fossil resources. According to research, the carbon emissions associated with PLA production are 80% lower than that of traditional plastic.

PLA can be recycled as it can be broken down to its original monomer by a thermal depolymerization process or by hydrolysis. The outcome is a monomer solution that can be purified and used for subsequent PLA production without any loss of quality.

So, what are you waiting for? If you are interested in cosmetic packagings with PLA biodegradable material, please feel free to contact us and request your free sample, let's work together on the green sustainable packaging.
